ECDC warns of ceftriaxone-resistant gonorrhoea spread

The European Union — European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) published a risk assessment on July 16, 2026, warning of an increase in ceftriaxone-resistant gonorrhoea infections across Europe. The assessment, based on reports from 11 European countries, found evidence of domestic transmission of resistant strains, a shift from previous importation from South-East Asia. While the overall risk to the general population remains low, the ECDC highlighted higher risk for certain groups and urged strengthened surveillance, antimicrobial testing, and prevention measures. The United Kingdom reported six treatment failures, all eventually cured. The assessment noted that resistant cases remain sporadic but warned of potential escalation if control measures are not implemented.
