The upgrade improves electricity reliability and capacity for Ghana — Kumasi and the Ghana — Ashanti Region, supporting residential, commercial, and industrial growth. Temporary outages may cause minor disruptions, but long-term benefits include reduced risk of grid collapse and enhanced power supply stability.

The Ghana — Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, in collaboration with the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Power Distribution Services Ghana (ECG), has commenced the final phase of the Ghana — Kumasi-Anwomaso Transmission Line Upgrade and transformer replacement at the Ghana — Kumasi (Ahodwo) Substation. The project replaces an ageing 19-kilometre single-circuit transmission line (364MVA) with a modern double-circuit line (978MVA), more than doubling capacity. Additionally, a 66MVA transformer will be replaced with a 145MVA unit. The contractor, China Geo-Engineering Corporation, has completed 56 of 60 towers. The work will cause temporary power outages in Ghana — Kumasi and parts of the Ghana — Ashanti Region from July 20, 2026, for about three months. Minister John Abdulai Jinapor warned that further delays could risk a total collapse of the national grid. GRIDCo CEO Frank Otchere stated the substation upgrades are necessary to match the increased line capacity.
