Xi meets leaders at WAIC 2026

Chinese President Xi Jinping held a series of high-level bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) and High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance in Shanghai, July 16-17, 2026. He met with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, and Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. Xi reiterated China's firm support for the United Nations, called for deepening cooperation with ASEAN members, and urged peaceful resolution of Thailand-Cambodia border disputes. He also announced China will provide 5,000 AI training opportunities for developing countries and develop international AI cooperation centers with regional blocs. A new intergovernmental organization, the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO), was established by 29 countries. The meetings underscore China's push for a UN-centered global AI governance framework.
