The resolution removes legal uncertainty for X Corp. and the music publishers, potentially stabilizing licensing revenue streams for labels and reducing litigation costs for X. The settlement may set a precedent for music licensing on social media platforms.
Major music publishers including Universal Music Group and Sony — Sony Music have agreed to end a legal dispute with Elon Musk's X Corp. over the use of their music on the X social-media platform. The parties asked a Tennessee federal court to dismiss the publishers' copyright infringement lawsuit and a Texas federal court to dismiss X's antitrust countersuit, both with prejudice. The original 2023 lawsuit sought over $250 million in damages for alleged infringement of nearly 1,700 copyrights. X had partially won dismissal in 2024, with only a contributory infringement claim surviving. X countersued in January 2025, accusing the publishers of antitrust violations. The settlement terms were not disclosed.
