Oyo school abduction convictions and appeals

In May 2026, gunmen attacked three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Nigeria — Oyo State, Nigeria, abducting 39 pupils and seven teachers. Two teachers, Michael Oyedokun and John Olaleye, were killed in captivity. After 56 days, a joint security operation rescued the victims. The Federal Government charged three suspects, Abdulrazak Umar, Yunusa Musa, and Shamsu Adamu Sani, with terrorism-related offenses. They pleaded guilty to some counts and were sentenced to life imprisonment by the Federal High Court in Abuja. The DSS, dissatisfied with the sentence, appealed, seeking the death penalty. Additionally, five Ansaru members were arraigned, and the Nigeria — Oyo State government set up a judicial panel to investigate the incident. The Senate donated N50 million to families of the deceased. Political figures, including Peter Obi, criticized President Bola Tinubu's handling of the crisis.
