The programme is expected to boost Nigeria's agricultural output, potentially reducing food inflation and import dependence. Increased grain supply could stabilize domestic food prices and improve rural incomes, positively impacting the agricultural sector and related industries.
The Federal Government of Nigeria, in partnership with the Agricultural Bank of China (BOA), launched the Renewed Hope Smallholder Agricultural Financing Programme on July 17, 2026 in Nigeria — Zaria, Nigeria — Kaduna State. The programme aims to increase Nigeria's annual grain production from 11 million tonnes to 25 million tonnes by providing affordable financing, improved seeds, fertilizers, and extension services to smallholder farmers. The initiative targets 500,000 farmers in the first phase, expanding to 2 million next year and eventually 5 million. Inputs are financed through BOA's single-digit loan facility at 9% interest, not grants. The programme is implemented with Arzikin Noma Africa and private aggregators. Minister Abubakar Kyari emphasized reducing food inflation through domestic production rather than imports. BOA MD Ayodeji Oludare Sotinrin announced plans for irrigation financing. The programme includes a Guaranteed Minimum Price mechanism to protect farmers.
