OKX Europe USDT to USDC Conversion

The event accelerates the fragmentation of stablecoin liquidity along regulatory lines, with European markets increasingly denominated in MiCA-compliant stablecoins like USDC and USDG. This may reduce USDT's market share in Europe but reinforces its dominance elsewhere, while benefiting Circle and Paxos.
OKX Europe launched a one-way conversion feature allowing European Economic Area customers to deposit Tether's USDT and convert it into MiCA-compliant USDC (and USDG). This follows the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) stablecoin rules taking effect on July 1, 2026, which require licensed platforms to only offer authorized stablecoins. Tether has not sought MiCA authorization, with CEO Paolo Ardoino criticizing the framework's reserve requirements. Other platforms like Revolut have also announced USDT delisting. The conversion is voluntary and customer-directed, not forced. OKX also partnered with Circle to enable global 1:1 USD-to-USDC conversions and offered up to 8% deposit bonus for assets moved from non-MiCA platforms. USDT remains dominant globally with ~$184B market cap vs USDC's ~$73B, but European trading volumes have shifted significantly.
