The commencement of EXIM operations at Vizhinjam is expected to lower freight costs and improve trade efficiency for India — Kerala-based exporters, potentially increasing cargo volumes and attracting investment in logistics and manufacturing around the port. Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone, as the operator, stands to benefit from increased throughput and revenue diversification.
Vizhinjam International Seaport Thiruvananthapuram will commence full export-import (EXIM) operations on August 18, 2026, transitioning from a transshipment hub to a gateway port. Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan will flag off the first export container. The port, developed under a public-private partnership between the Kerala — Government of Kerala and Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone, has handled 2 million TEUs within 18 months. The India — Central Board of Direct Taxes granted final approval on July 24, with conditions restricting initial operations to Direct Port Delivery and Direct Port Entry of Full Container Load containers. The launch is part of the state's Mission Samudra initiative, a $320 million plan to transform India — Kerala into a maritime hub. The port will remain an open-access, common-user facility. The move is expected to reduce freight costs, improve supply chain efficiency, and boost exports from India — Kerala, particularly for seafood, spices, pharmaceuticals, and cashew nuts. Transit times to the US and Europe will be significantly reduced compared to current routes via Kochi.
