Nigeria Ghana deepen anti-Afrophobia partnership

Nigeria and Ghana have agreed to deepen their partnership to combat xenophobia, Afrophobia, intolerance, and violence against fellow Africans. The agreement was reached during a bilateral meeting between Nigeria's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sola Enikanolaiye, and Ghana's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on the sidelines of the ECOWAS Mid-Year Summit in Freetown, Sierra Leone, from July 12 to 19, 2026. The ministers expressed deep concern over recent Afrophobic protests and attacks targeting African nationals in South Africa, warning that such incidents undermine Pan-Africanism, regional integration, and the free movement of persons as enshrined in the African Union's Constitutive Act and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). They called for urgent, coordinated regional and continental responses to address root causes, protect African migrants, and promote harmonious coexistence. Both countries agreed to work together to place Afrophobia on the agenda of the next African Union Summit and to advocate for stronger AU mechanisms, including enhanced monitoring, early warning systems, and preventive diplomacy. Enikanolaiye conveyed greetings from President Bola Tinubu to Ghanaian President John Mahama and commended Ghana's leadership on Pan-Africanism and reparative justice for the transatlantic slave trade and colonialism. Ablakwa appreciated Nigeria's support for the UN resolution on the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the fight for reparative justice. The meeting reaffirmed the strong fraternal ties between Nigeria and Ghana and their commitment to continue collaboration within ECOWAS, the African Union, and other multilateral platforms.
