Sweeteners linked to cognitive decline

The findings may increase consumer concern about artificial sweeteners, potentially affecting demand for diet products and sugar substitute manufacturers. However, the observational nature limits immediate market impact.
A study published in Neurology, the journal of the American Academy of Neurology, found that high consumption of several artificial sweeteners is associated with faster cognitive decline. The research followed 12,772 adults in Brazil over eight years, examining seven sweeteners: aspartame, saccharin, acesulfame K, erythritol, xylitol, sorbitol, and tagatose. Participants with the highest intake (average 191 mg/day) experienced a 62% faster decline in cognitive abilities compared to the lowest intake group (20 mg/day), equivalent to about 1.6 years of brain aging. The association was stronger in adults under 60 and those with diabetes. Six sweeteners except tagatose were linked to decline. The study was observational and does not prove causation.
