The Governing Council of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has dismissed eight staff members and sanctioned another following its 174th meeting on July 3, 2026. The dismissals were for offenses including examination misconduct, absenteeism, abandonment of duty, vandalism, fund diversion, and falsification of results. Those dismissed include Professor Emilia Oyira, Mr. Ukachukwu Echezunachi Darlington, Mrs. Akinrinade Opayemi Ogunluyi, Dr. Arum Priscilia Nchekwube, Mrs. Okoi Nyesam Eni, Mr. Joseph Edet Okon, Mr. Eworo Valentine Ibor, and Mr. Emmanuel Adariku. Dr. Mathias Agba received a two-year promotion delay and forfeiture of 50% of his withheld salary for negligence. The university reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for unethical practices under Vice-Chancellor Prof. University of Calabar.
