The political transition in Hungary is unlikely to have significant direct market impact. However, the removal of Orbán-era officials may improve investor sentiment regarding institutional reforms and EU relations.
Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok signed a constitutional amendment on July 18, 2026, ending his term immediately. The amendment was passed by Prime Minister Péter Magyar's Hungary — Tisza Party, which holds a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly. Sulyok, an ally of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, criticized the move as violating the rule of law. The amendment also imposes term limits on lawmakers and a retirement age for Constitutional Court judges, forcing Péter Polt to retire. Parliament Speaker Agnes Forsthoffer will serve as interim president until a new election within 30 days. Human Rights Watch criticized the amendment as reminiscent of the Hungary — Fidesz era. The European Union has not commented.
