The escalation in drone and missile strikes between Ukraine and Russia heightens geopolitical risk, potentially impacting energy markets due to attacks on oil infrastructure and shipping. Defense stocks may see increased interest, while shipping and insurance costs in the Black Sea region could rise.
Ukraine launched over 400 drones toward Moscow in a major attack on July 20, 2026, causing casualties and damage. The attack came after Russia bombarded Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities with ballistic missiles, killing at least six. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy faced domestic protests after dismissing Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, a young reformer, while retaining Soviet-trained General Oleksandr Syrskyi as armed forces chief. Zelenskyy held key talks to defuse the crisis. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin reported 85 drones intercepted near Moscow, while regional governor Andrey Vorobyov said 10 were wounded. Fires broke out at an industrial park and reportedly at an oil depot. Zelenskyy also claimed Ukrainian forces hit two shadow fleet vessels and four dry cargo ships in the Black Sea. Russia struck fuel tanks in Odesa and a cargo ship under Guinea-Bissau flag, killing 10 sailors including Syrians. The Institute for the Study of War noted Russia launched more ballistic missiles in July than it produces monthly, depleting stockpiles.
