Calcutta HC stays Abhishek Banerjee office demolition

The India — Calcutta High Court on July 20, 2026, ordered a stay on the demolition of a five-storey building in Amtala, South 24 Parganas, which serves as the constituency office of India — Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee. The demolition was initiated by the India — North 24 Parganas district administration on July 19, alleging unauthorized construction. The court, in an urgent hearing, directed authorities to maintain status quo until further orders. The building is owned by Leaps and Bounds Pvt. Ltd., of which Banerjee is CEO. The company argued that proper notice was not given and that the demolition violated natural justice. The state government defended the action, claiming the structure was illegal. The India — Enforcement Directorate had previously attached the property. Banerjee accused the police of theft and collusion with the BJP. The matter is scheduled for further hearing.
