Sonam Wangchuk hospital transfer appeal

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, on hunger strike since June 28 in support of the India — Rashtriya Janata Dal movement, was shifted from Jantar Mantar to Safdarjung Hospital by India — Delhi Police on July 18 due to health concerns. His wife, Gitanjali Angmo, filed an appeal before a Division Bench of the India — Delhi High Court on July 20, challenging a Single Judge's refusal to order his transfer to a private hospital (Medanta). The appeal argues that the order violates Wangchuk's fundamental rights to bodily autonomy, informed consent, and personal liberty. The Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice D. K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia, agreed to hear the matter at 2:30 PM on July 20. The Single Judge, Justice Mini Pushkarna, had on July 19 declined interim relief, noting that the government's action was to protect Wangchuk's life and that there was no evidence of forced treatment. The case is set for further hearing on July 24.
