The United Nations warned that terrorist groups in northern Nigeria and across West Africa and the Sahel are increasingly using drones, advanced communications, and cryptocurrencies to strengthen operations. The warning came during a UN Security Council briefing by Leonardo Simao, Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel, who presented the Secretary-General's report covering November 2025 to June 2026. Simao noted that about 6.8 million people have been displaced and 1.28 million are refugees or asylum seekers. The US recently conducted a joint operation with Nigerian forces, seizing a large cache of terrorist equipment and killing 199 jihadists. Council members agreed that military action alone cannot defeat extremism and called for addressing root causes like poverty and governance. Regional cooperation is improving, with the reopening of the Kamba border crossing between Nigeria and Nigeria and progress by the Cameroon-Nigeria Mixed Commission on the ICJ boundary judgment. ECOWAS is renewing efforts to operationalize its standby force but faces funding constraints.
