The investigation may lead to disposal of state-owned residential properties, potentially increasing supply in the real estate market and reducing government maintenance expenditure. However, the impact is limited as the properties are not a large portion of the market.

South African Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson has ordered a comprehensive investigation into 6,238 state-owned residential properties occupied by government officials. The probe, to be led by Director-General Sifiso Mdakane, will assess allocation, occupancy, and compliance with laws, and develop a disposal strategy for properties not needed for operational purposes. Most properties are in South Africa — KwaZulu-Natal (3,626), with smaller numbers in South Africa — Western Cape (566) and South Africa — Gauteng (407). The department spent an estimated R39.6 million on maintenance in 2025/26, but data covers only 108 properties. Macpherson argues the state should not own so many homes when officials already receive housing benefits, and that unnecessary properties should be sold to reduce costs and generate value.
