A review led by scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography warns that oxygen is disappearing rapidly from oceans and freshwater systems, potentially pushing Earth into an 'unsafe space.' The study, published June 30, 2026, in Limnology and Oceanography, argues that aquatic deoxygenation should be added as a tenth planetary boundary. Lead author Erica Ferrer and senior author Lisa Levin assessed interactions with all nine existing boundaries. The main drivers are warming, stratification, and nutrient pollution. The researchers propose four indicators to define a global boundary. The work was supported by the United States — National Science Foundation, UC San Diego, UC Santa Cruz, and UC Santa Barbara.
