The discovery could lead to more effective immunotherapies for pancreatic cancer, potentially expanding the market for combination treatments. However, the findings are preclinical, so near-term market impact is limited.
Researchers from the University of Minnesota Medical School published a study in Science Immunology identifying why pancreatic cancer is difficult for the immune system to recognize and attack. They found that some cancer cells hide by shutting down a detection process, and regulatory T cells block helpful T cells. By combining a treatment that restores visibility with immunotherapy activating CD4 helper T cells, they improved immune response and reduced cancer spread in preclinical models. The study suggests CD4 helper T cells play a larger role than previously understood. Funding was provided by the United States — National Institutes of Health (United States — National Cancer Institute), Department of Defense, American Cancer Society, and Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
