Kenya Ebola quarantine controversy

Kenyan activists accused authorities of violating a court order that halted the establishment of a U.S.-backed Ebola quarantine center in Kenya. The center was intended to quarantine Americans evacuated from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where an Ebola outbreak has killed at least 930 people. Samaritan s Purse reported that seven of its American staff were being quarantined in military tents at Laikipia Air Base. The Kenyan court had barred the facility's operationalization following a petition by the Law Society of Kenya and Ifo Institute for Economic Research, who argued it could overwhelm Kenya's health system. President William Ruto defended the facility as part of a partnership with the U.S., while Health Minister Aden Duale ordered suspension of construction. Protests by local residents turned violent, resulting in two deaths.
