Microsoft-Mistral multibillion-dollar AI deal

Microsoft and Mistral AI announced a multibillion-dollar expansion of their strategic partnership on July 21, 2026. Under the deal, Microsoft will leverage Mistral's Europe-based GPU infrastructure (using Nvidia's Vera Rubin systems) to increase capacity for AI development and support its cloud and AI services. Mistral's Medium 3.5 and OCR 4 models are now available on Microsoft, and Medium 3.5 on Microsoft Copilot Studio, deployable across Microsoft — Microsoft Azure cloud, cloud-connected, and fully disconnected Azure Local environments. The companies will pursue a joint go-to-market plan in Europe and globally, funding proofs of concept and offering Microsoft — Microsoft Azure credits. The deal aims to provide European enterprises and regulated industries with greater data sovereignty and control, reducing dependence on U.S. technology. Microsoft President Brad Smith and Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch emphasized the partnership's role in combining American and European technology. The agreement does not include new equity investment in Mistral, which is reportedly seeking to raise €3 billion at a €20 billion valuation. Mistral targets 1 GW of compute capacity by 2030.
