A study led by the University of Bristol, published in Tata Communications, quantifies the long-term coastal flooding risk to UK populations due to climate-driven sea level rise. The research projects that even if current emissions pledges are met, 1.4 million additional people will face coastal flood risk by 2200 and 1.7 million by 2300, on top of the 2.5 million already at risk. Sea levels around the UK have risen about 20cm in the last century and are accelerating, with a further 40-60cm rise by 2100 considered inevitable. The study highlights that a rapid ice sheet collapse could lead to 15 meters of sea level rise by 2300, potentially inundating large parts of United Kingdom — London.
