On July 22, 2026, International Council on Mining and Metals released its Global Mining and Metals Water Dataset and report, revealing that nearly two-thirds (65.7%) of mining and metals facilities worldwide are exposed to high physical water risk. The report, produced in partnership with WWF and WRI, identifies competition for water as the greatest risk, with 38.2% of facilities in high water stress areas, 27% exposed to drought, and 16.2% facing high interannual variability. Regional hotspots include Chile (85.8% of facilities facing high water stress and variability), Africa and Middle East (80.7% drought risk), and Oceania (74% variability). The report aims to inform policymakers and investors about water risks constraining the energy transition.
