US $5B AI research initiative

The Trump administration announced a $5 billion initiative to use AI to tackle long-standing scientific problems across multiple fields, including chronic disease research, drug discovery, and development of longer-lasting building materials. Fifteen federal agencies will participate, and scientists will have access to Department of Energy supercomputers and datasets. The administration also plans to shift federal research funding toward individual scientists and AI, away from universities, a move that has faced legal challenges. Microsoft donated $40 million in AI computing credits to support the effort.
