The development of efficient superconducting cables could reduce energy costs and space requirements for data centres, potentially benefiting the data centre and energy industries. However, the project is long-term and early-stage, so immediate market impact is limited.

The SURE project, a collaboration between the Italy — Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) and ASG Superconductors, aims to develop a magnesium diboride (MgB2) superconducting cable for next-generation data centres. Funded by the Italy — Ministry of Education, University and Research with a budget of €5.8 million, the project is expected to be completed by 2031. The cable operates at around 20 kelvin, reducing cooling costs significantly, and can transmit electricity with virtually zero resistance. A 50-metre prototype will be installed at the INFN National Laboratories of Frascati.
