The attacks threaten shipping security in the Black Sea, a key route for oil and grain exports, potentially raising insurance costs and disrupting trade. Greek-operated tankers are a major part of the global fleet, and heightened tensions could impact energy and commodity markets.

Greece has advised Greek-flagged commercial ships to enhance security measures in the Black Sea following a series of attacks on tankers. Recent weeks have seen Ukraine and Russia escalate attacks on vessels in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov. On Sunday, a Russian missile struck a corn-carrying ship near Ukraine — Odesa, killing 10 people. Two Greek-operated tankers, the ASIA (managed by Dynacom Tankers Management) and NISSOS IOS (owned by Kyklades Maritime Corporation), were attacked with sea drones at the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) terminal near Russia — Novorossiysk. A third Greek-operated vessel was also attacked. CPC, a pipeline connecting Kazakhstan's oil fields to the Black Sea, handles about 80% of Kazakhstan's oil exports. The advisory recommends increased security measures for all Greek ships in the region.
