India identifies 20 AI model proposals

The Indian government, through the India — IndiaAI Mission, has identified 20 indigenous sovereign AI model proposals for support, comprising 12 Large Language Models (LLMs) and 8 Small Language Models (SLMs). Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed Parliament in a written reply to the India — Lok Sabha. Notable models include Sarvam AI's 30 billion and 105 billion parameter models, Gnani.ai's speech-to-speech model, BharatGen's multilingual foundation models, and Avataar.ai's video generation model. The mission has empanelled 15 compute service providers, supported 237 projects with 93.18 lakh GPU hours, launched 12 hackathons, awarded 686 fellowships, established 27 India Data and AI Labs, and approved 58 AI Centres of Excellence. The India AI Governance Guidelines were released on November 5, 2025.
