The acquisition strengthens Godrej Capital's position in the fast-growing gold loan market, potentially boosting its AUM and customer base. The deal reflects increased competition in the Indian gold loan sector, which may pressure margins but also signals confidence in the segment's growth.
Godrej Capital, the financial services arm of the Godrej Enterprises Group, announced on July 22, 2026, the acquisition of the gold loan business of Kanakadurga Finance through its subsidiary Godrej Finance. The acquisition, valued at Rs 117.5 crore with an additional Rs 17.5 crore contingent on conditions, adds a portfolio of approximately Rs 280 crore in assets under management, nearly 12,000 customers, 54 branches in India — Andhra Pradesh, and about 250 employees. This marks Godrej Capital's first strategic acquisition, aligning with its ambition to build a Rs 1 lakh crore AUM franchise by 2031. The gold loan segment in India has seen rapid growth, with outstanding loans against gold jewellery rising 69.9% year-on-year to Rs 3.29 lakh crore as of May 2026. The acquisition follows Tata Sons — Tata Sons's entry into the gold loan business via a majority stake in Yogakshemam Loans earlier in July.
