Sowore defamation trial document rejection

The Nigeria — Federal High Court of Nigeria, presided over by Justice Mohammed Garuba Umar, rejected an attempt by Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the Nigeria — African Action Congress, to tender uncertified documents in his trial for allegedly defaming President Bola Tinubu. The documents, including a summary of proceedings and letters, were sought to be tendered through defense witness Wayne Chikezie Elijah. The United States — United States Department of State (DSS) objected, arguing the documents were public and required certification. Justice Umar upheld the objection, citing the need to ensure documents had not been tampered with. Earlier, DSS officer Uwen Davis testified that he authored a letter to X Corp. requesting removal of Sowore's post calling Tinubu a criminal, but admitted he could not identify the supporters mentioned. The defense indicated it may subpoena the DSS Director-General and Bayo Onanuga. The case was adjourned to July 28.
