FUTA Teaching Hospital labour dispute

The Nigeria — Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare intervened to resolve a labour dispute at the Federal University of Technology Akure Teaching Hospital (FUTATH) after the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trades Union Congress issued a seven-day strike ultimatum over alleged violations of workers' rights and breaches of the transition agreement. The dispute stems from the Federal Government's takeover of the former University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH) in Akure, which became FUTATH. A staff verification exercise found 265 workers ineligible for absorption into the Federal Civil Service, leading to tensions. The Ministry invited labour leaders to a meeting on July 24, 2026, to address the issues. The Coordinating Minister of Health, Mohammed Pate, commended the Nigeria — Ondo State Government for cooperation during the transition.
