Researchers from ETH Zurich have developed a portable, smartphone-assisted breath acetone detector that measures fat metabolism with laboratory-level accuracy. The device, commercialized by ETH spin-off Alivion AG under the name 'Nutrion', detects acetone in exhaled breath, a by-product of fat burning. In a validation study with 12 adults, 312 breath readings closely matched mass spectrometry results. The technology could enable personalized monitoring of diets, metabolic disorders like diabetes, and ketogenic therapies for epilepsy. The device is currently used in clinical studies at University Children s Hospital Zurich and by individuals for weight loss and athletic performance. The research was published in the journal Device on July 22, 2026, and supported by Switzerland — Innosuisse, Tax Foundation, and Accentus Foundation.
