Researchers at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology have developed a reusable magnetic adsorbent material that removes over 95% of micro- and nanoplastics from water within one hour, including particles as small as 30 nanometers. The material also removes heavy metals, dyes, and some PFAS compounds. A prototype combining the adsorbent with magnetic separation from One Eye Industries demonstrated effective recovery and reuse. The team scaled up production fivefold and reduced costs by 75% compared to earlier versions. RMIT is partnering with Fire and Test Australasia for stormwater treatment and with Star Water Group for US and European markets.
