A study published in The BMJ on July 22, 2026, found that glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, used for type 2 diabetes and obesity, are associated with an increased risk of hair loss (alopecia) in adults with type 2 diabetes. Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania Health System analyzed electronic patient data from over 50,000 patients, comparing GLP-1 users with those taking SGLT-2 inhibitors or DPP-4 inhibitors. The study found a 37% higher risk of alopecia compared to SGLT-2 inhibitors and a 68% higher risk compared to DPP-4 inhibitors. The absolute risk is low, and the hair loss is mostly non-scarring, with potential for regrowth. The findings may inform treatment decisions, but further studies are needed to clarify mechanisms and reversibility.
