A study by World Weather Attribution found that human-caused climate change has intensified a major drought across Europe, with extreme heat rather than low rainfall driving exceptionally dry conditions. The continent is gripped by drought from France to Romania, with parched rivers, water restrictions, and devastating wildfires after a historic heatwave in June. The study used weather data and computer models to compare the current drought to a pre-industrial climate, finding that extremely dry soils are 5 times more likely in western Europe and 11 times more likely in eastern Europe due to climate change. The European Union — Copernicus Climate Change Service reported that last month was the hottest June ever recorded in western Europe, with thousands of excess deaths.
