The acquisition signals growing convergence between traditional finance and digital assets in South Korea, potentially boosting investor confidence in regulated crypto platforms. However, Korbit's less than 1% market share limits immediate market disruption, with the long-term impact dependent on regulatory developments and successful integration of tokenized products.
Mirae Asset Financial Group completed the acquisition of a 97.15% stake in Korbit, South Korea's oldest cryptocurrency exchange, and announced its rebranding as Digital X. The deal, valued at approximately 141.4 billion won ($102 million), received approval from the South Korea — Fair Trade Commission (South Korea). Park Hyeon-joo, chairman of Mirae Asset, stated that Digital X will serve as a central platform for the group's 'Mirae Asset 3.0' strategy, integrating traditional assets with digital assets including real-world asset tokenization, security token offerings, stablecoins, and cryptocurrencies. The exchange will maintain existing services and prioritize compliance with anti-money laundering and customer identification standards. Mirae Asset does not plan to directly challenge dominant exchanges Upbit and Bithumb but aims to position Digital X as institutional infrastructure for regulated tokenized finance. The rebranding follows South Korea's advancing legislation for tokenized securities, expected to take effect in January 2027.
