Origin Energy, Australia's largest power and gas company, confirmed a data breach where hackers accessed customer personal information including names, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers, account details, and partial credit card or bank account numbers. The breach was first reported on July 30, 2026, after an alleged hacker contacted media outlets claiming to have stolen data of up to two million customers. Origin CEO Frank Calabria apologized and stated the company is working with independent cyber experts and authorities including the Australia — Australian Federal Police and the United Kingdom — National Cyber Security Centre. The company has set up a dedicated contact number for affected customers. Experts warn that the stolen data could be used for social engineering and phishing attacks.
