SIU probes 15 religious leaders for immigration fraud

South Africa's South Africa — Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has identified 15 religious leaders, including pastors and prophets, for investigation into allegations of irregular, fraudulent, and unlawful acquisition of immigration benefits such as visas and permanent residence permits. Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber disclosed this in a parliamentary reply to South Africa — African Transformation Movement MP Thandiswa Marawu. Of the 15 cases, 10 investigations have been concluded: eight have been referred to the South Africa — National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for possible prosecution, two were closed after satisfactory resolution, and five remain ongoing. The identities of the individuals and specific benefits are withheld to avoid prejudicing ongoing investigations and potential criminal proceedings.
