Nepal's record electricity export revenue strengthens its fiscal position and reduces trade deficit, positively impacting its creditworthiness. The expansion of cross-border energy trade benefits Indian and Bangladeshi power utilities by providing access to cheaper hydropower, potentially lowering electricity costs.

Nepal earned a record NPR 29.32 billion (USD 189.84 million) from electricity exports to India and Bangladesh in fiscal year 2025-26, a 67.96% increase from the previous year. Exports rose to 3.877 billion kWh, while imports fell 31.57% to 1.1498 billion kWh, resulting in a net trade surplus of NPR 18.76 billion. The India — Central Electricity Authority attributed the growth to increased hydropower generation, expanded cross-border transmission infrastructure, and improved energy management. During the 13th Nepal-India Joint Steering Committee meeting, both countries agreed to increase cross-border electricity trade capacity to 1,650 MW export and 1,400 MW import via two transmission lines.
