A large Danish cohort study published in JAMA Neurology found that long-term exposure to residential road traffic noise is associated with a modest increase in the risk of developing Parkinson s disease. The study followed over 3.1 million Danish adults aged 40 and older for a mean of 13 years, during which 20,587 were diagnosed with Parkinson's. For every 11.5 dB increase in noise at the most exposed facade, risk rose by about 3%. Having a quiet facade (at least 10 dB quieter than the loudest side) appeared to mitigate the risk. The association persisted after adjusting for air pollution, green space, and socioeconomic factors. The findings suggest noise pollution as a potentially modifiable environmental risk factor for Parkinson s disease, though causality is not proven.
