IBM announced on July 23, 2026, that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire HRL Laboratories, a private quantum research lab jointly owned by Boeing and General Motors. Financial terms were not disclosed. The acquisition adds silicon-spin qubit technology to IBM's existing superconducting qubit approach, creating a dual-track quantum computing strategy. HRL's expertise in quantum sensing, quantum materials, and advanced manufacturing will complement IBM's research. Boeing and GM will continue to partner with IBM on quantum applications. The deal is expected to close by Q3 2026, subject to regulatory approvals. This follows IBM's May 2026 announcement of Anderson, a quantum wafer foundry supported by the U.S. Department of Commerce.
