Gaza reconstruction cost $71.4bn

A joint report by Oxfam, the Palestine Economic Policy Research Institute (MAS), and the International Trade Centre (PalTrade) estimates that rebuilding Gaza will cost $71.4 billion over the next decade, seven times the combined cost of previous reconstructions after Israeli offensives. The report, titled 'Building Gaza Anew,' is based on the April 2026 UN-EU-World Bank Group Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment, which found $57.9 billion in total damage and economic losses. It calls for Palestinian-led reconstruction and rejects externally imposed models. The report details destruction of 371,888 housing units, 66 million tonnes of rubble, and severe damage to health, education, and cultural institutions. It also highlights that over 73,000 Palestinians have been killed, 173,000 injured, and 1.9 million displaced. The report presents a five-year recovery framework and urges governments to transfer decision-making to Palestinians, end arms sales to Israel, and stop trade with Israeli settlements. It accuses Israel of genocide and asserts that Israel should pay reparations.
