Nancy Reilly settled a High Court action against the Republic of Ireland — Health Service Executive (HSE) over the death of her husband Mark Reilly, who died by suicide three days after being admitted to the acute mental health unit of Cork University Hospital in March 2022. The HSE admitted liability and paid a €35,000 statutory mental distress payment. The court heard that Mark Reilly was placed in a single room despite being at risk of suicide, and that there was a failure to conduct adequate risk assessment. The HSE and Cork University Hospital issued apologies and noted that infrastructure improvements have been made since the incident.
