Bangladesh food insecurity analysis launched

On 23 July 2026, the Bangladesh — Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs launched the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Acute Food Insecurity Analysis for Bangladesh at a high-level dissemination workshop in Dhaka. The analysis reveals that approximately 15.3 million people (15% of the analyzed population) are experiencing acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 or above) between May and August 2026, including about 483,000 people in Emergency conditions (IPC Phase 4). The situation is projected to worsen between September and December 2026, with the number expected to rise to 18.1 million, including 787,000 in Emergency. The worst-affected areas include the Chittagong Hill Tracts, the Haor region, selected coastal districts, and among the displaced Rohingya population in Bangladesh — Cox s Bazar District and Bangladesh — Bhasan Char. Key drivers include adverse climatic conditions, floods, inflation, rising fuel and food prices, global supply chain disruptions, and broader economic challenges. The workshop was co-organized by FAO, WFP, Action Against Hunger, Save the Children, and GAIN. Participants discussed recommendations including scaling up food assistance, expanding shock-responsive social protection, strengthening climate-resilient agriculture, and investing in disaster preparedness. The Ministry and partners reaffirmed commitment to addressing immediate food insecurity and building long-term resilience.
