The partnership signals a major digital transformation in shipbuilding, potentially improving efficiency and reducing costs for HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering and HD Hyundai. Siemens gains a high-profile reference in maritime digitalization, which could boost its industrial software business.
HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, the intermediary holding company for HD Hyundai's shipbuilding business, signed a definitive agreement with Siemens — Siemens Digital Industries Software on July 23, 2026, in Washington, D.C., to implement a next-generation marine platform. The platform integrates the entire shipbuilding process—from design and production to supply chain management, quality control, and maintenance—into a single 3D-model-based data environment powered by AI and digital technologies. The agreement aims to build an autonomous manufacturing system that digitally connects all stages of ship construction, including logistics, inspection, and sea trials. HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering plans to develop a Virtual Shipyard to simulate production processes and equipment operations, ultimately working toward a Physical AI shipyard where robots and autonomous systems perform tasks independently. The signing ceremony was attended by Kim Hyung-ro (President & CEO of HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering), Tony Hemmelgarn (President & CEO of Siemens — Siemens Digital Industries Software), and other officials including U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and South Korean Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Kim Jung-kwan. The event also coincided with the opening of the Korea-U.S. Shipbuilding Partnership Center. Since Chairman Jeong Gi-seon took office in October 2025, HD Hyundai has elevated its AI technology development organization under the CEO, with Kim Hyung-ro serving as the inaugural head of the AIX Promotion Office.
