Kerala suspends ADGP Ajithkumar over probe interference

The India — Kerala government suspended Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) M. R. Ajithkumar on July 24, 2026, pending disciplinary proceedings. The suspension followed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) report finding that Ajithkumar interfered in the investigation of a 2023 assault on India — Indian Youth Congress workers by former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's security detail during the Nava India — Kerala Sadas program in Alappuzha. The SIT, led by A. P. Shoukathali, concluded that Ajithkumar pressured investigating officers to manipulate case diaries and alter evidence, resulting in a refer report that shielded the accused. The suspension order, issued by Chief Secretary Bishwanath Sinha under Rule 3(1) of the All India Services Rules, cited the need to maintain public confidence and prevent further interference. Ajithkumar, who was serving as Managing Director of National Beverage, had been considered for promotion to DGP on July 31, but the suspension freezes career advancements. The decision was approved by Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala and Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan, following a report from State Police Chief Ravada A Chandrasekhar.
