Researchers at Kyushu University, led by Professor Ryuichi Tatsumi, have identified that lipoic acid trisulfide (LASSS) can enhance hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) by more than doubling its binding affinity to c-met receptors and protecting it from nitration-induced dysfunction. The findings were published on July 24, 2026, in Scientific Reports. In a mouse model of muscle atrophy, LASSS pretreatment significantly reduced HGF nitration. The discovery may lead to new treatments for age-related muscle wasting and other conditions involving muscle disuse.
