On July 24, 2026, a federal grand jury in Del Rio, Texas, indicted 11 individuals in connection with the deaths of seven migrants, including a 14-year-old boy, who were trapped inside a sealed shipping container on a Union Pacific freight train in May 2026. The migrants, from Honduras and Mexico, were smuggled into the United States and locked in the container without ventilation or cooling. Temperatures reached 88-92°F. Six bodies were found in Laredo, Texas, and a seventh victim was discovered near railroad tracks in San Antonio. The defendants face charges of conspiracy to transport aliens resulting in death and aiding and abetting, each punishable by up to life in prison. Eight suspects have been arrested; two remain fugitives. The case is prosecuted under the Homeland Security Task Force.
