UK aerospace engineer shortage worsens

The UK aerospace and defense sector faces a shortage of around 10,000 specialized engineers per year, exacerbated by competition from AI and technology companies. Over 50% of licensed aerospace engineers are over 50, and fewer than 10% are under 30, according to a March report by the Royal Aeronautical Society. The sector has grown 31% in the last decade but the talent pipeline has not kept pace, said trade group ADS. Companies like Boeing and Airbus are struggling to recruit as experienced engineers retire, while technology firms such as Anthropic and OpenAI attract talent with higher salaries. The UK government hopes renewed defense investment tied to the war in Ukraine will boost interest, as BAE Systems develops unmanned drones like the Brontanax. Recruitment efforts at the Farnborough International Airshow include interactive exhibits and flying displays to attract young people.
