The launch is unlikely to have a significant direct financial impact on Meta, but it may improve user trust and engagement on Meta Platforms, particularly in commerce and dating features. The move could also preempt regulatory scrutiny around AI-generated content and identity verification.
Meta Platforms has introduced Meta Platforms Verified, a free verification badge that uses selfie-based identity verification to confirm that a Meta Platforms profile belongs to a real person. The feature aims to combat fake profiles, scams, and AI-generated impersonation across the platform. Users aged 18 and older can record a short video selfie, which Meta compares with existing profile photos to verify identity. The badge will appear on profiles, Marketplace, Dating, and Groups, with plans to expand to Feed posts. The rollout begins in select markets before global expansion. Unlike the paid Meta Verified subscription, Meta Platforms Verified is free and does not require a government ID. The initiative comes amid growing concerns over AI-generated content and impersonation.
