The rapid growth of Chinese NEV exports and technology licensing is reshaping the global automotive industry, increasing competition for legacy automakers and boosting demand for batteries and EV components. Investors should monitor the expansion strategies of BYD, GAC, and XPeng as they capture market share and establish local production bases.

China has become the world's largest NEV exporter, with exports reaching 2.615 million units in 2025 (up 103.7% YoY) and 2.355 million in H1 2026 (up 120% YoY), according to CAAM. Chinese automakers BYD, GAC Group, and XPeng are shifting from product exports to technology licensing, local manufacturing, and brand building. BYD licensed its e-platform 3.0 to Toyota and blade battery technology to Hyundai; XPeng supplied its autonomous driving system and Turing AI chip to Volkswagen. Seven ASEAN countries adopted BYD's EV charging standard. GAC Group aims for 250,000 exports in 2026 and 1 million by 2030. XPeng plans to cover Latin America by 2028. GAC Mexico joined the Electric Mobility Association of Kenya to support EV adoption. The shift brings investment and jobs to host countries.
